The Dual Personalities of the Protagonists in Wuthering Heights

Abstract: Wuthering Heights is the Flower of English literature; it is a romantic work which describes a thrilling love story. It started from the wildness and ended as a tragedy, in which we see the long lasting revenge and hatred between the two families. It demonstrates the seamy side of the society. This novel built two very complex protagonists because of their dual personalities. In order to make the readers have a better understanding of this novel, this thesis analyzes the main characters, i.e. Heathcliff and Catherine, through their growing background, their behaviors, their language, and their inner worlds described in the novel written by Emily Bronte. From the detailed analysis, we can understand a truth about this novel more clearly, that is, society shaped the people’s character and their character determined their destiny.

摘要：《呼嘯山莊》是英國文學(xué)史上的一朵奇葩。它是一部描寫驚心動魄愛情故事的浪漫主義文學(xué)作品。小說以荒原開始，以悲劇收場，在這期間我們不僅可以看到持續(xù)了半個多世紀(jì)的仇恨與報復(fù)，還可以理解到當(dāng)時社會的陰暗面。這部小說的主要人物，以及他們的雙重性格，都反映了環(huán)境對人物性格的影響，同時他們的愛情悲劇反映了人物性格決定了人物的命運。本文主要通過主人公成長的生活環(huán)境、行為、語言以及內(nèi)心世界分析了其主要性格特征，以及該性格特征對其愛情悲劇的影響。
